Preview
The Cleveland Guardians head to Kauffman Stadium on Friday, September 25, for a 7:40 PM ET matchup against the Kansas City Royals. Gavin Williams gets the ball for Cleveland, squaring off against Kansas City's Noah Cameron in what shapes up as a meaningful late-season divisional contest. With the AL Central race a constant subplot throughout 2026, every game between these two clubs carries weight, and Friday night is no exception.
Starting Pitchers: Gavin Williams vs. Noah Cameron
Gavin Williams draws the assignment for the Guardians. The right-hander has been one of Cleveland's most closely watched arms in the rotation, and his ability to generate swing-and-miss stuff against a lineup as athletic as Kansas City's will be the central storyline of this game. Williams will need to command his secondary pitches early — the Royals are not a team that gives away at-bats.
On the other side, Noah Cameron takes the hill for Kansas City. Cameron is a relatively young arm in the Royals' system, and while detailed season numbers are not available heading into this preview, the Guardians will look to test him early and often. Cleveland's approach at the plate — patient, disciplined, built to wear out starters — is exactly the kind of offense that can expose a young pitcher in a pressure situation.
Kansas City Royals Lineup to Watch
The Royals are sending out a lineup that demands respect. Bobby Witt Jr. bats second at shortstop and remains one of the most complete players in the American League. Leading off is catcher Carter Jensen, an unconventional choice that speaks to Kansas City's lineup construction this season. Jac Caglianone slots in third at right field, with Maikel Garcia hitting cleanup at third base. Vinnie Pasquantino holds down first base in the five spot, and Salvador Perez, a perennial threat in the middle of any lineup, serves as the designated hitter batting sixth.
- Carter Jensen (C) — Leadoff
- Bobby Witt Jr. (SS) — One of the AL's most dangerous hitters
- Jac Caglianone (RF) — Power threat in the three hole
- Maikel Garcia (3B) — Cleanup
- Vinnie Pasquantino (1B) — Patient hitter who makes pitchers work
- Salvador Perez (DH) — Veteran presence with extra-base power
- Michael Massey (2B), John Rave (LF), Kyle Isbel (CF) — Bottom third to watch
Keys to the Game for Cleveland
Williams Must Limit Damage Against the Top of the Order
Witt Jr. and the Royals' top three are capable of putting crooked numbers on the board in a hurry. Williams keeping the ball down and working ahead in counts will be critical. If Kansas City's top of the order gets rolling early, it becomes a long night for Cleveland.
Guardians Need to Make Cameron Work Early
Cleveland's best path to a win runs through getting Cameron's pitch count up in the first few innings. Force him into deep counts, take walks when they're there, and look to string hits together rather than hunting for the big swing.
Bullpen Management
Late September means rosters are expanded and managers have options. How both clubs deploy their bullpens after the starter exits could decide this game as much as anything that happens in the first five innings.
Prediction
This is a tough road environment, and the Royals' lineup — anchored by Witt Jr. — is legitimately dangerous. But if Williams is sharp and Cleveland's offense applies pressure early against a young starter in Cameron, the Guardians have a real path to a win. Call it a close one: Guardians 4, Royals 3.
